Effective Benefits and Uses of Holy Basil

Basil is by far one of the most popular herbs, noted for both its wonderful flavor and its lovely form and color. Describing its flavor is not easy; sweet and pungent, it can taste of lemon, licorice, mint, even cinnamon! The plants come in many colors, from bright green to deep purple. Although it is grown for flavor, some are used as ornamentals. Most basils are native to Africa, Asia and India where they are grown as perennials.

Tulsi finds great importance in respiratory tract disease. It gives marvelous results in upper respiratory tract infection (URTI). As mentioned earlier that it acts rigorously on kapha hence it works as good expectorant relieving from wet cough. It also finds its good use in bronchitis and asthmatic conditions. It helps to fight the cause of allergy by which our respiratory tract gets inflamed and then resolves the causative agent. Good results have also been seen in anti-tubercular treatment as it works as antibiotic eliminating the bacteria. It also shows good results in chest pains. Tulsi finds great use in fever as it act as antipyretic, pain reliever, and provides strength to our body.

Vitamin E is the primary antioxidant found in all tissues. Low vitamin E levels are consistently associated with an increased risk and occurrence of neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. In a study of patients with Alzheimer’s, treatment with 2000 IU of vitamin E per day for 2 years was beneficial in delaying the primary outcome (time to the occurrence of death, institutionalization, loss of ability to perform activities of daily living, and severe dementia) of disease progression.

Tulasi or Tulsi (Holy Basil)? Is it good?

Tulsi is said to have lot of properties. Marked by its strong aroma and a stringent taste, herbal therapists claim that it promotes longevity and call it "the elixir of life." When applied locally along with lemon juice, it is claimed that it helps in eradicating ringworms, eczema and other skin diseases. It has also been tried successfully by some naturopaths in the treatment of leucoderma.
Tulsi has antioxidant properties, and helps boost the immune system fight off damaging free radicals that lead to disease and ageing. It raises the human body immunity by increasing the antibody production. It purportedly helps the body fend off stress and balances the mind, nerves and emotions. With calcium, vitamin C, carotene and phosphorous, tulsi purportedly helps skin stay supple and healthy. It is anti-inflammatory by nature, other than being antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It also purportedly works as a repellent to mosquitoes, flies and other harmful insects. Tulsi has been traditionally used as a universal remedy in cases of malarial fever.
A prime herb in ayurveda, the juice of the leaves purportedly gives relief in common cold, fever, bronchitis, cough, digestive complaints, etc. The oil of tulsi has been traditionally used to treat earaches and snake or scorpion bites. The seeds are used in curing urinary problems. To function as an aphrodisiac, powdered tulsi root is consumed with clarified butter (ghee).
The herb is purportedly also useful in teeth disorders, especially pyorrhea. Tulsi leaves, the most used part of the herb, purportedly serve as a nerve tonic, sharpen the memory, strengthen the stomach and induce copious perspiration. Sun dried and powdered tulsi leaves have been used for brushing teeth. They have also been mixed with mustard oil to be used as toothpaste. This purportedly preserves dental health, counteracts bad breath and massages the gums, while also addressing other teeth disorders.
Studies are underway to prove its effectiveness in treating diseases like viral hepatitis among others.
Turmeric, tulsi and neem are natural ingredients that are regularly used in this system to cure skin ailments. The preparations have burn healing effects and scar reducing properties among others.
